Extended Bio Profile:
Captain Landers is a native of Utica, N.Y. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1967. Following selection to the Navy Enlisted Scientific Education Program, he attended the University of Missouri and was commissioned in 1973, with a Master of Science in electrical engineering. He also earned a Master of Arts in public administration from Golden Gate University and a Master of Science in resource management from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces. He has attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Center for international studies courses in foreign politics and national interest.
Captain Landers served over 31 years in the Navy’s Submarine community, and had numerous assignments and sea and Shore Command of the Naval Submarine Base in Bangor, Wash. His last assignment in the Navy was the deputy chief of legislative affairs in the Pentagon, where he served until his retirement from the Navy in December 1998. He became the deputy national executive director and chief operating officer of the Armed Services YMCA in April 1999. He held that position until his selection as the national executive director and chief executive officer in June 2011. Captain Landers has been married to his wife Kris for 39 years. They reside in Fairfax Station, Va., and have three children: Tim, Megan and Michael.
