Why did you become involved in your profession or industry?:
She became involved in her profession because she developed a passion for community-based literacy after teaching her 10-year-old adopted twins how to read with six of Dr. Renee Fuller's 'Ball-Stick-Bird' learning-to-read publications.
Extended Bio Profile:
Mrs. Chagnon was hired by Rutgers University to direct the fledgling Rutgers Urban Literacy Program in Camden and serve as a developmental learning specialist for the campus educational opportunity fund. Her three-credit urban literacy practicum turned hundreds of students of all majors into successful tutors of children, youth and adults in schools and community organizations in the Burlington, Camden and Gloucester Counties of New Jersey. Her 'Introduction to College Writing' course and the first-day-on campus workshop that she created for the department helped over 50 under-prepared college freshman each year adjust to their new environment and create a bond with each other and the staff. She has written three books entitled 'Easy Reader, Learner, Writer: Six Videotapes and a Teacher Guide,' 'Voice Hidden, Voice Heard: A Reading and Writing Anthology' and 'You, Yes YOU, Can Teach Someone to Read: A Step by Step How-To Book.' She also worked as a teacher at an elementary school and as an interim principal of a city school.
