Extended Bio Profile:
Through hard work and determination, Ms. Broscious has successfully navigated through a variety of difficult life situations, perhaps emerging as a stronger person because of them. The child of a broken family, she developed a close relationship with her maternal grandparents. She started working at age 16 as a cleaner in a laundromat; then, when she was a senior in high school, got a part-time job with the environmental services department in a hospital. She recalls working every available weekend and holiday. In addition, she was employed part time while she attended college, cleaning beds, working in the operating room, and performing a variety of other tasks. Ms. Broscious also survived a serious house fire when she was 20 and a diagnosis of thyroid cancer a year later. She underwent major surgery one week after her 22nd birthday, but decided to forgo therapy with radioactive I-131 as it might interfere with her plans to have children. After college, Ms. Broscious became licensed as a practical nurse, and worked two or three part-time jobs until a full-time position became available in Laporte Nursing Home. She got married at 24 and moved to be closer to her family. Four years later, her daughter was born. When Ms. Broscious experienced a recurrence of cancer in 1994 and 1995, she was successfully treated with I-131. She eventually decided to further her education, becoming a registered nurse in 1999. Ten years later, she added rehabilitation nurse to her list of credentials and began working on a rehabilitation floor. She then became a resource clinician, which led to her present involvement with the hospital's research committee. Looking back over the years, Ms. Broscious acknowledges having gone through "many different and difficult situations." Nevertheless, she says, "I think all my struggles have helped me survive and grow as a person." She is still married to her wonderful husband, and her daughter is now a college student.
