Dr. O'Brien holds the rank of captain in the New York Guard and in July 2007, he was promoted to commander of the 1102 Forward Medical Support Detachment. He hosts his own cable television show called, 'Ask Dr. Tommy O,' which is a health education show in New York. He and his colleagues established a triage center in 2001 for 9-11 survivors at Stuyvesant High School at Manhattan, in New York. He is also a ringside boxing physician. His research has been published in several health-related articles and he holds a United States patent for a medical instrument that he developed.
