She became involved in her profession because she was intrigued and challenged by the populations of children not being adequately served by the traditional educational models.
Extended Bio Profile:
Ms. Queen believes that it is the responsibility of the public school system to meet the diverse needs of students in as many different ways as possible.
Ms. Queen spent the first years of her teaching career in Charlottesville and the Eastern Shore of Virginia, where she worked with students labeled learning disabled and emotionally disturbed in elementary and middle schools. She educated colleagues with the characteristics and methods most helpful to these students. In 1993, she moved to Ithaca, NY, where she has taught for Tompkins Seneca Tioga BOCES ever since.
Ms. Queen was instrumental in transforming a self-contained program for severely emotionally disturbed children into a Circle of Courage School, where she was the lead teacher in the Turning Point High School.
Trained in Circle of Courage in 1996 at the Black Hills Seminars in South Dakota, she is a Response Abilities Pathways (RAP) trainer. She presents at numerous conferences, consults with local school districts and agencies, lectures in teacher preparation classes, and constantly mentors colleagues.
Ms. Queen has also been published in the professional journal, 'Reclaiming Children and Youth.'

Teaching All Content Areas and Social-Emotional Skills to Ninth and 10th-Grade at-Risk Students in a Self-Contained Setting at an Alternative High School, Mentoring Other Professionals in this Setting, Presenting at State and Regional Conferences and Lectures in Teacher Education Classes, Training Other Professionals to Modify their Approaches and Programs to Better Serve their Students, Offering Three-Day Training to Youth Work Professionals in Connecting with at-Risk Youths, Especially in Times of Crisis
