She became involved in her profession because she was inspired by a group of friends who rallied around, one of their friends who had breast cancer, to care for and support her. This motivated her to build a support-based community organization that would promote free mammograms and give strength to all women in the community.
Extended Bio Profile:
Ms. Galeos started Sussex County Women's Forum through the miraculous experience she had while watching a group of friends care for a woman with breast cancer. Although they had their own families to tend to, they rallied around her and, in the process, inspired Ms. Galeos to ask herself how she could best help. She thought about how each of us, at any given time, can suffer from unexpected life events and feel alone, adrift and stranded, as if on an island. She wants the woman who feels she is stranded to be able to look out from her ‘island’ and see herself surrounded by a bay of faces who love and support her. Furthermore, she wants that woman to see the bay of supporters spill out into an ocean of faces of people, who, although she may not know and may never meet, are working in small ways to do what they can to help. Every race, Ms. Galeos tells her runners, ‘On days when you feel you can't do anything right and you can't seem to please anyone – when you question your self-worth – remember that you matter here. You matter now; you matter to me. You are my ocean!’ Ms. Galeos realizes that there are many organizations that raise huge amounts of money for research. For her, however, the research seems meaningless if women are not getting mammograms. This belief, paired with her revelation, prompted her to narrow her vision and work for the free mammogram program.
