Extended Bio Profile:
Ms. Pelligrino overcame cervical and breast cancer, meningitis, leukemia, iron overload, thalassemia, and hemochromatosis. She wrote the following poem in 1985 while being hospitalized for five weeks and then diagnosed with cancer:
I'm fighting hard to be myself
That's all that I can do.
No longer can I walk in shoes
That don't belong to me.
It's safer just to be a part,
Of someone else's tread-
But if I live my life that way,
Then most of me is dead.
Another poem she wrote is:
Stop looking at the way things are,
And look at what might be.
It's easier to view what is,
But that limits what you see.
Remind yourself-each day is new,
And dreams they can abound.
For how can the winged Eagle soar,
If he never leaves the ground.
