Work History:
Joined the Quaker Oats Company as a project leader in November of 1968 upon completion of my Ph.D. at Michigan State University. I worked for the Quaker Oats company for 30 years in various research and technical management capacities. During my tenure at Quaker Oats, I developed technology to enhance product storage stability, worked in International Tech Service and product development, conducted & coordinated cereal technology research programs and initiated an oat biotechnology program.
Career Achievements:
Edited two books on "Oat Chemistry and Technology" for the American Association of Cereal Chemistry.
Wrote several chapters on oat chemistry, utilization and processing which were published in various cereal text books.
Granted a US Patent on a method for preparation of whole grain oat product.
Developed and coordinated a multi university and government laboratory program to produce an oat genetic map.
Co-author of the barley (B-glucan) heart health petition.

What Does He/She Attribute Success To:
I attributes my success to hard work and a good education.
Why did you become involved in your profession or industry?:
I became involved in this profession as a result of a strong interest in biological science and more specifically a desire to learn more about plant, animal and microbial biochemistry. These interests led me to explore options in this general area. Subsequently, a part-time job as a lab technician in a food microbiology laboratory piqued my interest in Food Science. As a result, I enrolled in the Food Science program at the U. Of Illinois.
Extended Bio Profile:
I retired from Quaker Oats in 1999 where I worked in research and development for over 30 years. At the conclusion of my career, I was a senior research scientist and was responsible for managing outside research contracts. These programs focused on developing biotechnology capabilities to enhance oat breeding programs and develop superior oat varieties from both an agronomic and an oat quality point of view. I currently maintain an active interest in oat and cereal research and provide consulting services upon request.
