Extended Bio Profile:
Dr. Cohen is the chief of the division of thoracic surgery at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center and the driving force behind HealthTek Consulting, a healthcare consulting firm in Baltimore, MD. He serves several life sciences companies, as well as regional and national healthcare systems on matters of strategic growth and development. Dr. Cohen was previously the head of the section of general thoracic surgery, surgical director of lung transplantation, director of the cardiovascular and thoracic residency training program and chief of cardiovascular and thoracic research at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, VA. He was concurrently chairman of the medical advisory committee of the LifeNet Health, an organ procurement organization.
Dr. Cohen completed the honors master program with a bachelor of arts in biochemistry and molecular biology, and a master of science in neurobiology and physiology from Northwestern University. From there, he attended the University of Maryland, Baltimore, where he completed the medical scholars program with a Ph.D. in physiology and biophysics, as well as post-doctoral fellowship research as an American Heart Association research fellow.
Dr. Cohen completed a general surgical internship and residency, additional National Institutes of Health-funded post-doctoral research fellowship training, and a cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at the Medical College of Virginia. His research on cardiac electrophysiology led to the discovery of electrical protection strategies for cardiac surgery and thoracic organ transplantation for which he was awarded a U.S. patent. Choosing to sub-specialize in general thoracic surgery, Dr. Cohen then completed an advanced fellowship in minimally invasive thoracic surgery and lung transplantation at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation.
Dr. Cohen is board certified in general surgery, cardiovascular and thoracic surgery. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the American College of Chest Physicians, and is affiliated with most major general surgery, surgical research, cardiothoracic surgery and chest medicine associations. He was awarded the Joel J. Roslyn, MD Faculty Research Award from the Association for Academic Surgery and continued a basic science research program on molecular biophysics of transplant organ failure and protection, carcinogenesis and mechanisms of cancer metastasis concurrent with his attending surgeon appointment at Virginia Commonwealth University.
