Nonprofit organization - ConnectAbility Australia was founded in 1992 by a group of community members and families to meet the needs of people with significant disabilities. Determined to provide opportunities for people requiring high levels of support to access community based resources, facilities and services they established Newcastle Community Access. In 2010 after consultation with participants, families, carers and staff the service was renamed ConnectAbility Australia to better reflect our values, vision and mission. In 2015 ConnectAbility Australia announced a strategic amalgamation with Jesmond Connected Communities that will enable both organisations to expand their support services for local people trough offering a wider range of services. ConnectAbility continues to be inspired by the uniqueness of the individual needs of its participants and it is this that is driving ConnectAbility to grow and diversify the services we provide.

He attributes his success to his continuous learning and his passion for changing and evolving. Mr. Carey brings with him a strong background in in supporting people to achieve having worked in the areas of disabilities and children’s services for over ten years. “The most valuable resource of any organization are its people,” he says, “Whether you are talking about our participants, families or staff. Each individual presents a unique opportunity to achieve a goal either personally or professionally that together support ConnectAbility to remain a leader within the sector.”
Why did you become involved in your profession or industry?:
He became involved in his profession after starting as a tradesman. After 16 years, he went into nursing, and then disability.

Mr. Carey has more than two decades of experience in the disability and nonprofit sector. He has commenced a new business division in children's services, and has operations in eight locations with more than 100 staff. ConnectAbility Australia was founded in 1992 by a group of community members and families to meet the needs of people with significant disabilities to provide opportunities to access community based resources, facilities and services. In 2015, a decision was made to diversify and grow the organization to provide supports and opportunities to other groups within the community and a merger between ConnectAbility and Jesmond Connected Communities was completed. They now provide a broad range of personalized supports to older community members, children and young people and people with disabilities. ConnectAbility participants reside throughout Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Port Stephens, Maitland and other Lower Hunter local government areas. Their approach is personal, flexible and centered on the person. Overseeing the annual budget and expenses; Looking after new business and strategic direction; Handling tenders and acquisitions; Holding regular meetings with senior management
