She became involved in her profession when she started in the telecommunication industry in 1975 with Southwest Florida banks; she later joined SunTrust as a group vice president of telecommunications in 1981 with senior management responsibilities in all areas of voice and data communication design and support.

As a chairwoman of a national government committee in Washington, District of Columbia, Ms. Perkins monitored Federal Communications Commission decisions and filed written professional opinions on the impact of those decisions to the Federal Communications Commission and the United States Justice Department. In addition, she reported on the effects of the Telecommunications Act of 1996 to elected officials in the United States House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate.
