She became involved in her profession because she was inspired by her sister, who was a teacher. Though she had worked in other industries, she found that her niche was in teaching and effectively applied all her experiences into her teaching methods.

Ms. Powell has done extensive relief work for Hurricane Katrina, has been featured in articles which were published in Newsweek magazine and was featured on two magazine covers. She has also received several awards and honors from civic and community organizations. She received Mayoral proclamations and was recognized as a Presidential and Governor's Appointee.
