Expanded Biography:
Mrs. Orwig's husband, Chuck Orwig, became interested in the oil industry in 1957. At that time, they were newlyweds who had decided to relocate from California to Midland, Texas. Mr. Orwig started flying low aerial oil surveys using instruments to determine desirable locations for drilling. The surveys were popular and they met a lot of people in Midland who were also in the oil industry. During that time, they also discovered that Ohio was just beginning an oil boom. As a result, Mr. Orwig moved to Ohio in the spring of 1965, formed their current company and started leasing, drilling and producing oil, which was the beginning of Orwig Oil Co. 45 years ago. The family moved in the fall of 1966. It was a busy and exciting time for both of them. Her husband loved people and the work that he was doing. He was respected for his honesty by the oil men who knew him and by officers in the Ohio Oil and Gas Association. Mr. Orwig also donated his time and expertise to start a school in Athens, Ohio, to train young men to be 'pumpers' for all the new oil rigs going up in several counties all around their company. He also went to Washington, DC for the Ohio Oil and Gas Association to try and improve some issues in the state that were important at the time. From 1965 to 1998, Mr. Orwig had drilled, completed and produced over 100 wells in Ohio. Prices went from $38 per barrel in 1979 to $8 per barrel in 1984, putting a lot of oil companies out of business in many states, including Ohio. For her part, she has been involved with the business from the beginning, through great and lean years. For the past 11 years, she has had full responsibility for all decisions within the company. She views her career as a fun, exciting ride that she still enjoys to this day.
