Ms. Hackney had an allergy to latex and she was instrumental in convincing hospitals to become latex-free. She completed an internship in the pediatric intensive care unit and in the operating room, during which time she worked with Dr. Ben Carson, a neurosurgeon at Johns Hopkins University, where she later worked for four years.
