Throughout the duration of your career, what was the one highlight that stood out the most?:
The highlight of his career was coaching his first state track and field state championship at Manual High School in 1974. Manual was the high school Mr. Gatewood graduated from in 1957. His brother-in-law, Alex Burl was his assistant coach for that team and Alex's two sons were members of the team. Additional highlights of his career were being named to the All-American High School Track and Field Team, and going on to coach eight more state championships at Montbello High School for Denver public schools.

What Does He/She Attribute Success To:
He attributes his success to his love for coaching young men, dedication to his work as a track and field coach and research, and to the influence and mentoring he received from his brother-in-law, Alex Burl. The inspiration he received from his assistant coaches throughout the years, and support he receives from his wife, Pat, family and friends.
Why did you become involved in your profession or industry?:
He became involved in his profession because he was an athlete, and was inspired by his brother-in-law, who was a teacher, coach and athlete.
Extended Bio Profile:
Mr. Gatewood taught physical education for 30 years and coached boys’ track and field for 35 years. He produced the most successful track and field programs in the state of Colorado during his 35-year career of coaching. He is proud to say that he touched many young men’s lives in a positive way; his purpose was to not only build champions, but to build character in young men. He feels that it is not always the winning that is most important, but teaching young men and preparing them for the future. He was dedicated to his career as a track and field coach. He researched coaching, went to clinics, and read numerous books to better himself as a coach. Teaching and coaching was something Mr. Gatewood always wanted to do. He dreamed of becoming a teacher and coach since his junior year at Manual High School, and knew he had to earn a college education to accomplish his goal. As a collegiate athlete, his most outstanding college athletic achievement was attending Northeastern Junior College at Sterling in Colorado. He was a Junior College All-American in Track and Field and also received an honorable mention as an All-American running back.
