She attributes her success to the influence and support of her mother, Mrs. Ethel Booker Foreman and her grandmother, Mrs. Martha James Booker. She was also influenced by Miss. Jennie Burgo, her high school English teacher from Pittsburgh, Penn.

She became involved in her profession because of her lifelong passion for education.

Ms. Hughes worked as an administrative assistant to the principal of a Los Angeles, Calif. middle school for three years. She worked as an educator for 30 years, teaching classes in U.S. and world history for grades six through 12, as well as special education classes for middle and high school in all subjects. Married to Virgil Hughes and has 3 Children,daughters Jewell Spenser with the EPA,Jawanna Thompson,Deputy Sheriff,LA County,Sheriff's Office and her Son Virgil Hughes II,serving in the Marines and US Army in Technology.
Position Responsibilities and Duties:
Working with the city council and the mayor to improve the lives and living conditions of the elderly people; Holding an annual large fundraiser called the Black and White Gala; Promoting line dancing and other multicultural activities
