What do you feel separates you from the rest of the professionals in your industry?:
Teaching is a two-way process. You give information and you expect feedback from the learner. If I realize that a student finds it hard to accept or learn a concept, I exhaust all means to simplify my teaching. I am a patient teacher.
What has been the most outstanding thing you have done thus far in your career?:
My greatest achievement is organizing a college of nursing based on humanism and a sound conceptual foundation of knowledge. Armed only with my Master's Degree of Nursing on nursing education and a strong clinical nursing experience, I used my instinct and a vision of what a Philippine college of nursing should be and not be. I also became one of the accreditors of the most prestigious accrediting body, the Philippine Association for Accrediting Colleges and Schools.
Expanded Biography:
As a student, I was awarded the honor Nursing Student of the Year in 1949 in my school of nursing, the honor of its kind at the school. I was later invited to teach in my alma mater. In 1974, I organized a new school of nursing and became its principal. After three years, we qualified to be a college of nursing with a Master of Arts program in nursing. As dean, I introduced a nursing curriculum based on Betty Newman's conceptual framework, the first such curriculum in the Philippines. It streamlined classroom design that had chairs for left-handed students, overhauled nursing student uniforms to make it both elegant and functional, monitored faculty focused on individuals progression and redesigned student preparation programs for national nursing board examinations. Results were very rewarding. Our students consistently ranked among the top 10 [places in nursing board examinations from 1978-1985. Before I migrated to the United States in 1985, our college of nursing passed accreditation, the first college of nursing in my city to rank among six other colleges by the Philippine Association for Accrediting Colleges and Schools. After this, I was invited to be an accreditor, again the first for such an honor. My success in my career? I am a disciple of Collin's formula. The teacher has not taught if the learned has not learned.
