What do you feel separates you from the rest of the professionals in your industry?:
What separates me from other professionals in my industry is the fact that I treat each student as a unique individual. I also stay in close touch with parents to keep them involved through all changes with government intervention without becoming militant within the union. Perhaps most important, I make myself available 24-7 for all whom are in my class. After 40 years, kids are tougher, but I still care and love each and every one.
What has been the most outstanding thing you have done thus far in your career?:
Hearing from former students or being visited by them and learning of their successful accomplishments and future intentions. What a blessing to know these wonderful individuals and to have been a small part of their lives.
Expanded Biography:
I, Shirley Olson, was born and raised in Yakima, Washington, known to a few of us here as the fruit bowl of the nation. My mother was a housewife and my father, after working at several various jobs, finally discovered his niche. He was an excellent photographer. His life became very busy as he developed a photography business. His time was mostly spent photographing weddings, which he enjoyed very much. As a young school girl, piano lessons was a point of focus. Practicing was tedious at times, but I finished through high school and continued through college. While studying to be a teacher, I took up organ lessons too. Upon completion of college I was accepted into an honorary organization. I continued with this until I moved from Oregon. While working in Oregon I continued in school during the summer, receiving a master's in elementary education with the minor in music. Always wanting to teach and work with kids was a good choice. Being the neighborhood babysitter for several years was an excellent introduction. After moving back to Washington state, I took a music position that eventually allowed me to move into the classroom. This next year I will complete about 42 years in education. I have finally decided to let the younger generation do the honors, while I move on to developing an internet business with one of my sons.
One of the memorable goals, while I lived in Oregon, was learning to fly a plane. The most thrilling part, other than soloing for the first time, was to fly from eastern Oregon on my cross country assignment. It was a beautiful, clear day with no wind, that allowed me to enjoy the phenomenal scenery. Everything was great until I was almost to The Dalles, Oregon. I was following the Columbia River and setting the plane up for a landing when I ran into a headwind that felt like it would stop the plane before it could be landed. Even though that was a bit unnerving, the flight was an experience that few are ever fortunate to have. Not only did I have a wonderful flight home, but it was the completion of 2 years of concentrated effort. The only thing left was to apply and obtain a license. That was done during the summer. As a teacher, rewards come in all sizes and sometimes surprising packages. It is so special when students return to visit after one year, sometimes after several years. It's nice to see their happy smiles knowing they have felt and know success. Kids are the best! They have kept my heart young! Not only have I truly been blessed by participating in the teaching profession, but also by the lives of the students that have been my pleasure to work with. I know I have learned much from them and have been privileged to have been touched by their sincerity and honesty about life, making my life much more pleasant. I am very grateful for having known and worked with all of them.
